Het rijke en verwende jongetje Harvey valt overboord van een oceaankruiser. Harvey wordt opgevist door de bemanning van een visserssloep en eist van de kapitein dat die hem onmiddellijk naar de dichtstbijgelegen haven brengt. De zeebonk heeft daar echter geen oren naar: Harvey zal minstens drie maanden aan boord van de vissersboot moeten blijven. Het is tegen wil en dank, maar de jongen steekt op die tijd heel wat op over de zee en meer nog over de primitieve, ruige, maar grootmoedige vissers. Zijn hele wereldbeeld wordt dooreen geschud en zijn leven zal nooit meer hetzelfde zijn.
